Happy Friday ATX! Edition 6

2/16-2/18

Happy Friday ATX! It’s National Tartar Sauce Day! Might be a perfect excuse for you to go check out the restaurant in the “best thing we ate this week” category 😉

I want to open this weeks newsletter by asking you a question…

When was the last time you created something that you really wanted to create?

As a society we are consuming things all of the time, and don’t get me wrong it is wonderful to have the ability to do so.

But I want to encourage you guys to tip the scales a bit, whatever your medium is, over this weekend, I want each of you to tap into your genius and create something.

It could be a painting, a drawing, a song, a journal entry, a video, or anything else.

Just take something that is in your head and your head alone, and make it a reality.

The world needs more of that, and you will probably feel pretty good after you do it.

Pro tip: If you’re feeling uninspired, you just need more real-life inputs.

Go outside. Go for a walk in nature. Go for a run through the city. Prance around in the grass at Barton Springs barefoot and then take a dip.

Absorb everything.

You’ll get inspiration.

On that note, let’s dive into what’s going on in Austin this week!🤠

Weekend Forecast: This weekend is shaping out to look pretty lively. We got a Cirque Noir party. A White Denim Show. Austin Marathon. Plenty of Standup Comedy. We have a cold front coming in on Saturday, but it’s nothing that’s going to stop anyone from having a great time.

You know it’s a good weekend whenever I’m struggling to decide which events go in the 5 slots for each day of the weekend.

This is one of those weekends.

Best thing we ate this week…

Mardi Gras was on Tuesday, which makes this week a perfect week to share one of Austin’s best-kept secrets.

You want drool-worthy southern food with a strrrrong extra dirty Mexican martini, a chilled glass, tajin on the rim, in a generously filled shaker.

Or how about the drink I had to go with my lunch yesterday?

The Rum the Jewels - Plantation 5-year rum, guava nectar, fresh lime, grapefruit serrano reduction, with a splash of pineapple juice, served with a 2x2 cube.

(This is no-joke one of the best cocktails in Austin, big statement… I know)

Rum the Jewels

This place, Cypress Grill, has the best cajun food. Boudin Balls. Crawfish Etouffe. Shrimp & Grits. Muffalettas. Poboys galore. Fried seafood platters. The list goes on.

What was my lunch?

Well… I was on some fat kid sh*t today.

I had a seafood platter with fried catfish, fried shrimp, and fried okra.

It tasted even better because it’s part of the lunch special menu and is only $11.99.

Next time you want to grab dinner with a friend, or just have that craving in your soul for some sweet authentic southern food, hit up Cypress Grill. You won’t be disappointed.

Most fun we had this week… Now don’t get me wrong, I LOVE Peter Pan Mini Golf.

But there’s a new kid on the block.

Well sort of new… They opened in November but we just got around to checking it out earlier this week.

Having lived in Denver for a couple of years, we had some experience with this concept with a spot called Urban Put. It had a bar, food, an equally visually stimulating put-put course, and was always a fine time when it wasn’t packed to the gills.

Dirdie Birdie is a similar concept here in Austin, and I’ll say they have it pretty dialed in.

You make a reservation for your game, and if you want you can also make a reservation to eat at their restaurant before or after your game as well.

We didn’t actually make a reservation for food here because we were going to go to our favorite restaurant in the domain. I’ll tell you guys more about that in a future edition. However, when we found out that Dirdie Birds restaurant had a gluten-free blooming onion, we decided we had to check it out.

Center: the Smoky Blackbird - a citrusy spicy mezcal cocktail that was pretty good
Right": The GF blooming onion

The food was surprisingly good, as evidenced above, we had the blooming onion. I think I couldn’t shut up for 5 whole minutes about how amazed I was that such a thing exists.

I couldn’t believe this place took what is notoriously one of the most unhealthy foods in American history and said “Let’s make it gluten-free.”

We had some other food also but I am not gonna go on and on about it. It was solid, but this segment is more about the experience as a whole.

In Denver, my least favorite part of the experience was waiting in a jam-packed line leading up to hole 1. There was none of that nonsense here.

You stayed at your table or in the bar/lounge area until you got a text that it was your time to play. They were pacing out the groups of players to make sure there was enough distance and you weren’t stepping on the heels of the group in front of you.

Every hole was very visually stimulating. From renditions of some of Austin’s most well-known landmarks like the Pennybacker Bridge and the COTA F1 track to psychedelic neon-laden rooms, this is a super fun spot to have a date or just a casual night out with friends.

New Business that we want to try… Everyone says California has the best sushi, and I mean given their proximity to the ocean, I’d be inclined to believe them.

However, LA-based sushi restaurant Sushi Roku has their work cut out for them stepping into a city with steep competition such as Uchi, Soto, Neighborhood, Otoko, and many notable establishments.

Their official opening is tonight in downtown Austin, we’ll be checking it out soon to see how it compares against the local treasures.

This week I am so excited to share that we got our first inbound sponsorship request. It came from a newsletter that I have been subscribed to for a while because its founder is Anthony Pompliano, a popular Youtuber in the crypto space.
