Happy Friday ATX! š¤ Edition #30
Check out the best things happening in Austin this weekend! šŖ©š¶
Happy Friday ATX! š¤ Itās National Rice Pudding Day so I thought I would highlight a rice pudding dish here in Austin that is so good that it got a New York Times Article written about it.
So I havenāt spoken too much publicly about it, but Iāve been a musician my entire life. I play most instruments, but the drums have my heart.
I have played in many bands over the years, but for the past nearly 8 years, I was without a band and only making music alone.
Fast forward to about 10 months ago, some coworkers and I started a band, and even though we all quit that job not too long afterā¦ we remain friends and bandmates to this day.
And why am I telling all of you this now? Well, we landed a banger of a show at Austin Garden & Studio this Saturday night from 8-11pm, and we would love for you to come out and rock with us. Iāll be on the drums.
It will be a mixture of our original music, with some crowd-pleaser covers, and we fully intend to bring the house down.
Anyways, letās hop right into this weekās newsletter with a memeā¦
Itās true. Thanks r/Austin for this one.
Weekend Forecast: There a bunch of fun things happening this weekend from pool parties and roast battles, to some great live music! š
The weather looks like it will be hot but great, and with both Kiana and I having pretty sweet events happening, we are super excited for this one!
Kiana is teaching yoga on Sunday morning at that little juice shop/cafe called Prana that we featured recently. I didnāt even know that she had that on the schedule when I featured it! Tickets are linked below!
Best thing we ate this weekā¦ We had a pretty active day yesterday and last night we got a late night craving for some sweetsā¦ only problem is that it was nearing 11pm almost nothing was open.
There was one spot that we both kept coming back to, it was called Baked Bear, and time was running out. We made our move. When we got there the courtyard was almost completely dark and empty, except for one spot, with the lights on and people sitting at tables out front. This had to be it.
We roll in and see a glowing neon blue sign that reads āCOOKIE MONSTERS ONLYā and at nearly 11pm after a long day yesterday, I know I am definitely qualified to be thereā¦
There was a ton of cookies and ice cream options to make your own custom ice cream sandwiches, and I knew I could spend all night in there trying to figure out if I tried to design the perfect ice cream sandwich so I just followed my intuition. I didnāt even read the menu really I just pointed at the first cookie that looked tasty and asked what it was and she said āthis one is the melted butter cake cookieā and I said yes. Then I spontaneously picked cookie dough ice cream without even considering other options because you canāt really go wrong with it right?
Kiana made hers with gluten free fudge brownie cookies (youād never even know they were gf) and dark chocolate ice creamā¦ it was also a masterpiece. If youāre gluten free, itās absolutely worth checking this place out for a ridiculous dessert option.
Anyway, it made for the most glorious ice cream sandwich I have ever seen. The cookies were so buttery and insane, the ice cream was above average, and the way they put the sandwiches together was the most impressive partā¦ I mean look at those things! Neither of us finished them.. And if we went again we could probably split 1 and it would be perfect.
Add Baked Bear to your list of late night sweets heroes in Austin, there arenāt enough of them.
The most ridiculous ice cream sandwichesā¦ and we didnāt even add toppings š
Most fun we had this weekā¦ We had some family in town and they wanted to go to Schlitterbahn down in New Braunfels yesterday. We spent the entirety of the day on the old side (the best side) that runs along the beautiful Comal River. Iāve been going down to New Braunfels and Schlitterbahn my whole life, but I tend to forget just how beautiful the Comal is. There are so many fish and turtles, the water is crisp, cool, and crystal blue.
Lines were pretty long, but we still got to go on 4 of the longer rides and hung out at the pool bar for awhile too. I had a great time, and at only a little over an hour away, itās definitely worth the trip. They are only open for one more full week before they close down portions of the park and switch to weekends only! So if itās somewhere you have wanted to check out, now is you chance!
Pro Tip: If you can swing it, I would do a fastpass if I were to go again so I could skip the lines and ride more rides. I think it ends up being worth it if you were to just look at how many more rides you would get to experience over the course of a day.
Schlitterbahn
New Business that we want to tryā¦ The Marylander food truck was opened up not too long ago by some friends of friends over off Webberville Road in arguably the best food truck park in Austināhost of several of our other favorite spots, and a haven for good vibes on weekend mornings.
They offer up East Coast fare (specifically Maryland if you couldnāt tell..) think crab cakes, crab dips, crab sandwiches, crab pretzels, as well as wings and other things! Usually, I am in that area earlier in the morning for coffee, but Iām going to make it a point to get myself some crab dip there in the afternoon this weekend.
