Happy Friday ATX! 🤠 Edition #21
Check out the best things happening in Austin this weekend 6/7-6/9
Happy Friday ATX! 🤠 Apparently it is National Chocolate Ice Cream Day AND National Doughnut Day… which team are you?
It’s June and summer is in full swing! Yeah it might be hot here in the summer, but it’s also when this city feels the most alive to me. People are out, patio bars are popping, and next week is the only Blues on the Green of the summer.
If you don’t know about BOTG, it’s been a long-time summer concert series that has always been free in Zilker Park. When I was a kid it was almost every single Wednesday throughout the Summer, but over the years they have tapered it back, and now it’s only a back-to-back (Tuesday and Wednesday) 2-night concert. It is still free though, and has a ton of local Austin Food vendors and some bigger corporate sponsors giving out goodies as well.
I have many memories of BOTG, and it’s one of the things that makes Austin so special. This year the lineup is great too, and on Tuesday it includes one of my favorite local bands that I have actually featured in the newsletter before, Golden Dawn Arkestra!
It actually got canceled this year at first and it was a travesty. However, after a collective disappointment from everyone who loves this Austin tradition, its biggest sponsor and our favorite grocery store H-E-B, stepped up to make the show go on.
Given the uncertainty that existed around BOTG happening this year, I highly recommend giving it a go next Tuesday or Wednesday. With the growth that Austin is experiencing you never really know when some of our favorite traditions could cease to exist.
Anyway let’s jump right into it with a meme!
For real…
Weekend Forecast: Sunny and in the 90s is what you can expect this weekend. Enjoy the 90s while they last haha 🥲 With tons of activities, from Comedy in the Capitol to late-night dance parties at Higher Ground and orchestral renditions of your favorite movie soundtracks, I’d bet you’ll meet cool people anywhere you go on our list down below if you’re open to it.
Best thing we ate this week… I have no idea how it took us this long to feature this place, not sure if we were subconsciously gatekeeping it or what.
One food I will always love is Thai Food.
We’re pretty blessed here in Austin with some fantastic Thai restaurants but one of my favorites is Super Thai. It’s in a tiny little space on South Lamar just south of Mary Street, in the same parking lot as The Golden Goose (more on them another time…). We rolled in got seated and ordered relatively quickly, ordering a Chicken Satay, a Pad Thai with Chicken, and a Tom Kha. The food came quickly as always and I doused it in chili oil…as always…
I always like it in this place because it’s intimate, the kitchen is open and everything is right there within earshot. It’s so connected that you smell it in the air when they’re cooking a spicier dish and you hear all the clangs and noises of the burners as they prepare the food. If you’re a fan of Thai food or just good food in general, give it a shot. It’s been one of our spots for years. .
Super Thai
Most fun we had this week… This week has been a grind, I recently got a new job at a fast-growing company and am in the deep end right now.
So the most fun thing we did this week was our little date night last night where we hit Super Thai and then went to Lick Honest Ice Cream. Eating ice cream is fun right?
Speaking of Lick… if you’re looking for a place to get some ridiculous chocolate ice cream for National Chocolate Ice Cream Day today, their Dark Chocolate, Olive Oil, and Sea Salt ice cream is the best chocolate ice cream I have ever had in my entire life.
It has just the right amount of salt to compliment the rich dark chocolate, with the olive oil giving an almost whipped smooth consistency to the whole thing… perfection. Kiana got their vegan chocolate ice cream that was made with coconut milk and it was also dang good. Don’t sleep on their other flavors like Roasted Beets & Fresh Mint, or the Goat Cheese, Thyme & Honey either. Everything they do is so well done and they’re a true Austin-born and raised company so supporting them always feels good.
Chocolate Ice Creams! Vegan one on right
New Business that we want to try… So this one has been on my radar for a little while now, but one of my good friends just got a new apartment off of Manor Road and I have driven past it twice in the past week, so it’s fresh on my mind. The Long Goodbye opened in April, and the buzz around it hasn’t stopped. With a cocktail lounge, an awesome patio bar slanging frozens, a Fleet Coffee location, supposedly one of the best new taco trucks around in La Barbacha, and a vintage store called Howdy’s, this place is jam-packed with cool sh*t.
If you manage to check it out before I do, come back and reply to this email and tell me how it is!
